IP Performance Measurements

IP Performance Measurements

Introduction

IP Performance measurements tool provides information about latency and packet loss from Leaseweb data centers to ISPs in a zone.

Zone is a group of metros, typically multiple states or provinces or countries (e.g. EU West)

The tool is based on RIPE Atlas.

RIPE Atlas is an Internet data collection system. It is a global network of devices, called probes and anchors, that actively measure Internet connectivity.

Leaseweb uses RIPE Atlas to create measurements from ISPs (Broadband providers) probes to Leaseweb probes, which are in Leaseweb data centers.

The measurements show the latency and packet loss information for users who want to use services which are delivered from Leaseweb data centers.

The below table shows the regions, which countries or states or metro areas are within a region and the Leaseweb data centers in each of them.

Measurements

For each Leaseweb data center, there is an IP Performance measurement showing latency and packet loss to 3 ISPs in each metro area of the zone that is located.

E.g., For Leaseweb data center AMS-01, the measurements show latency and packet loss to ISPs in each of the metro areas in EU west zone.

The measurements can be filtered to show latency and packet to:

  • A specific country
  • A specific network
  • A specific time/date

EU West measurement

Customer Portal

The IP Performance measurement page is located under the Network menu.

62226452

By opening the menu item you will be prompted with an overview page of all available measurements that Leaseweb has created.

Each measurement has it’s own unique Id. You can also filter by the destination site and search for specific measurement name.

62226451

By default for each measurements chart and statistics are pre-loaded from all the probes that belong to the given measurement.

The system uses 15min-based sampling when plotting the charts and displaying the stats.

We use AVG calculation for the latency. The total average latency of the whole measurement can be found at the top of the table.

The latency and packet loss trends are visualized using line graph for a better overview and simplicity.

A detailed measurement page consists of two main components

  • Reporting (tab) statistics and charts developed and created by Leaseweb
  • Latencymon (tab) statistics and charts that are embedded from RIPE Atlas.

Leaseweb Tool

The Reporting page consists of the following components:

  1. Date/Time
  2. Latency chart and stats table (build dynamically by selecting or deselecting (all/none) probes)
  3. Packet loss chart (the stats are visible in the Latency stats table)
  4. Filtering per country and per probe. The latter can be done by deselecting the “Select all probes” option.

Latency

More detailed explanation is shown in the images below.

62226449

If the probes are deselected, the line charts and stats table are empty i.e., stats will be drawn up or be dynamically build based on the probes that you select.

62226448

By hovering over a dot or peak, it is possible to see the latency information available from all probes.

Important: If you click on any peak (dot), you will be prompted with a traceroute widget (as seen on the images below)

The traceroute tool provides a map of how data on the internet travels or it’s routed from the source probe (deployed at an ISP) towards our destination datacenter RipeAtlas probe.

62226447

62226446

Packet Loss

What is packet loss?

Packet loss occurs when one or more transmitted data packets fail to arrive at their destination. When packets fail to reach their destination, end users may experience disruptions such as slow service or loss of network connectivity.

An overview of the packet loss for all probes can be found in the last column of the Latency table above the chart.

The Y axis presents the % of packet loss, and the X axis gives the date/time period.

Note: When a single day is selected in the calendar, you can see more granularity because we calculate based on 15min samples.

If you select more than a day, a month or a longer period it get aggregated to 1h, 2h, 4h or a day.

62226445

62226444

By hovering over a dot or peak, it is possible to see the packet loss % information available from all probes.

62226443

RipeAtlas Tool

LatencyMON is a client-side tool in which latency trends are visualized and compared using stacked charts. This tool is embedded from RIPE Atlas.

More information about the tool can be found on the following link: https://labs.ripe.net/author/massimo_candela/new-ripe-atlas-tool-latencymon/

The Latencymon page consists of the following sections:

  1. Measurements and probes filtering.
  2. Absolute and relative time/date selection
  3. Latency graphs per probe and stats table visible when you hover over a peak in the graph

Note: Time date/time scale is located at the bottom of the tool.
