Public Cloud

Description

Public Cloud instances are delivered on our high-availability, high-performance newly designed CloudStack-based KVM platform. The platform is combined with local or fast network-attached central storage. In case of failure on a hardware node will cause the Public Cloud instance to restart on a different node, minimizing downtime.

Instance

An instance is a virtual machine capable to run cloud-based applications. Instances are IaaS computing services located on Leaseweb-owned Infrastructure available for purchase on a monthly basis or on-demand with hourly billing.

Our offer includes wide selection of instance types designed to match specific business needs:

  1. General Purpose instances provide a balance of compute, memory, and networking resources, and can be used for a wide range of workloads.
  2. Compute-optimized are ideal for applications where compute needs are higher than memory needs and benefit from large quantities of processors.
  3. Memory Optimized are designed to deliver fast performance for workloads that process large data sets in memory.

Software

Leaseweb supports a number of Linux distributions, as well as various Windows and BSD operating systems on Virtual Servers as well as various Control Panels.

Operating system

Leaseweb installs a basic version of the operating system of your choice, with SSH or RDP enabled for remote access. We also install some additional scripts to enable certain functionality like i.e. enable resetting your instance password.  You can reset the password of your instance yourself from the Leaseweb Customer Portal. Below you will find an overview of available images:

  • Linux (CentOS 7, Almalinux 8, Rockylinyx 8, Debian 10, 11, 12, FreeBSD 12, 13, Ubuntu 18.04, 20.04, 22.04)
  • Windows (Windows Server 2016 Standard, Windows Server 2019 Standard, Windows Server 2022 Standard)

Storage

Public Cloud instances offer a diverse range of storage options, each tailored with distinct capabilities to accommodate varying needs:

  • Local storage: performant (up to 15K IOPS and high throughput), more budget friendly than NFS storage, but not highly available (if one of the hypervisors goes down, recovery of instance takes longer)
  • Central storage: good speed (5K IOPS), Netapp NFS storage that is highly available (if one of the hypervisors goes down, recovery of instance within minutes)

Default size for root disk is 5GB for Linux and 50GB for Windows instances and customer can upgrade during the deployment process up to 5TB. Storage selection is always rounded to be minimum of billed value of 1GB.

Network

All Public Cloud instances are connected to our state-of-the-art network. For more information about network, please visit the Leaseweb website.

Data traffic

Public cloud instances include 1 TB for pooled Internet traffic meaning instances from your contract will share together 1 TB data pack across Sales org. Incoming traffic for Public Cloud is free of charge, while outgoing traffic is charged per GB.  Additional usage is surcharged according to table below.

Traffic restrictions

We apply some traffic restrictions to provide you with a better virtual server network isolation, such as:

  • blocking traffic from IP addresses not belonging to the virtual server
  • blocking broadcast/multicast traffic types between virtual servers in the same subnet

Firewall

Leaseweb offers free Basic Firewall functionality as a feature for virtual server to provide basic filtering functionality. For more information on free Basic Firewall, refer to the article on firewall.

IP addresses

With each public cloud instance, you will get 1 public IPv4 address. You cannot obtain additional IPv4 addresses yet. For more information, refer to the article on IP addresses

Network types

Leaseweb offers Volume network for your virtual servers. The Volume network offers one or more default Tier1 transit provider and selected peering connections. Volume network is engineered to provide a cost-efficient solution to high bandwidth needs. For more information on the network types and the network type availability matrix, refer to the article on network types.

Service Level Agreement (SLA)

To keep your instances connected 24/7, Leaseweb's Basic Service Level Agreement is provided at no additional charge. For additional support, there are multiple levels of SLAs. For further information, refer to the article on Service Level Agreement (SLA)

Delivery time

To start using Public Cloud, you will need to place your order through the website is first verified by us over phone. This is a one-time verification process applicable only for your first order. Then in fill in your contact information to create an account and you will receive a verification code via email. Then use the verification code to complete your account setup and one-time payment. Once, verified, the order will be delivered, fully automated, within 24 hours.

Public Cloud APIs

The Public Cloud APIs provide you the ability to control each instance that you have at Leaseweb. Using APIs, you will be able to order, list your instances, retrieve information, power on and off, reboot, reinstall, start/stop load balancer, and retrieve administrative information from all of your deployments.

Check out the complete list of Public Cloud APIs.

FAQ

Q: Is the provision of dedicated vCPUs included in the Public Cloud Offer?

A: No, dedicated vCPUs are not included yet on any vintage (Public Cloud platform). Now, all platforms include only shared vCPUs.

Q: Which virtualization technology is used?

A: Leaseweb Public Cloud uses KVM virtualization to spawn instances/virtual machines. The Leaseweb CloudStack platforms are built on KVM hypervisors based mainly on Ubuntu operating systems and even some CentOS Hypervisors.

Q: What are the limits for a single VM in terms of storage?

A: Public Cloud instances support up to 5 TB of storage (either local or central).

Q: Does Public Cloud support IPv6?

A: Public Cloud doesn't support IPv6 yet, only 1 IPv4.

Q: Why vRAM in GiB and HD in GB?

A: Public resources are sold using different metric systems, which can lead to confusion when determining the amount of storage and memory included in instances. To clarify, it's important to note the following conversion factors:

1 GB is equal to 1,000,000,000 bytes [Decimal]
1 GiB is equal to 1,073,741,824 bytes [Binary]

Q: How does the instance firewall work?

A: The integrated Firewall is IP-table based, capable of blocking TCP, UDP, ICMP protocols.
